Who knows? Who says?
If I ever become that stranger, Say thirty years later, Maybe I've written a good few books, Married a man with rugged good looks, Or maybe a man with bad tempered ways, Who knows? Who says? Maybe a child or two later, I'll find after years you've married a painter, Who's had trouble breathing these last few days, Who knows? Who says? And maybe I'll double up in tears, When I hear your child has disappeared, And you, my friend, are dying. If I ever become that stranger.
Who knows? Who says?
If I ever become that stranger, Say its thirty years later, And I'm the one whos married the painter, Hes had trouble breathing these past few days, Who knows? Who says? Maybe we havent spoken in years? How will I know you broke into tears? The day you heard from your gossipy friend, My babys life is at an end? And I, your friend, am dying? If I ever become that stranger?
Who knows? Who says?
Maybe I wont become that stranger, Maybe say its thirty years later, And we both have married painters, Both with rugged good looks, Maybe we've both even written books, Who knows? Who says? Maybe a child or two later, Your baby dies and so does my painter, Together we could fight through all the tears, As we'd have done for all those years, And hold your hand I will, As we both, my friend, are dying. If I dont become that stranger.
Who knows? Who says?
