Long before the birth of mankind, before the seasons were marked and the oceans were tamed. Before the sun and the moon were given names. Before each star was plucked from the sky, hidden away and replaced with small lights that don’t dance like they should. Before the wars between blood were waged.
During this era of life before life, two twin sisters ruled. Their names have been changed and mistaken by many after thousands of years of unproven stories, but one fact is consistent in each version: one sister was the Goddess of Light, the other of Darkness.
These sisters co-existed peacefully, until one night when a violent disagreement shook the nameless space.
Both sisters, it seemed, had fallen in love with one man; the almighty God of the heavens. Although both women had equal abilities in battle, they chose to fight to the death.
The war lasted one thousand days and nine hundred and ninety nine nights. Somewhere in the middle of this bloodshed produced by two women’s jealousy and armies of opposite innocents, the Goddess of Light went to seek the help of an elderly Crone she knew. The Crone told her that only a blade fashioned out of the blood of children could kill such an almighty being as her sister. The Goddess, repulsed by this thought, left the Crone with no promise to return.
The Crone was angered by her friend’s disgust. She knew better than to become involved with such a bloody war. The Goddess of Darkness sent spies to watch the Crone, and one night, while the elderly witch slept, the spies crept in and stole her Book of Shadows.
In it was the secret of the Bloody Sword; the sword that could kill a being of power. A sword that could kill a Goddess. That was not all that the Dark Goddess learned. If she took the sword that had potential to murder her sister, and used it to carve out her soul, and drink that which is the life of her own sister, she would not only rule the Darkness, but she could seize the Light as well.
On the thousandth night, the Goddess of Light was stolen from her bed and dragged to a chamber deep beneath the reaches of her army and protectors. When she discovered that it was her sister who had sent for her to be brought there, she spat at her captors and cursed them. When her sister entered the chamber, she gave her the name, “Fury,” for the sinful act that she was about to commit.
Fury laughed. She told her sister how weak she thought her sister was, how pathetic. To think, her once great sister was now lying broken in front of her, her life-blood falling to the floor. Fury told her sister that she was a waste of life.
The sword was raised. Fury asked her sister if she had any last sentiments to give her only living relative.
“I am the mother,” replied the Goddess of Light, “I will nurture all things that need care, I will protect all those who fail to help themselves. I am Gaia, I am one of the last pure-blood Leaders in this tiny infant universe.”
“And when you are dead, I shall be the last,” Fury smiled on.
The Blood Sword was plunged through Gaia’s heart, and the Goddess bled dry. Consumed with greed and darkness, Fury began to carve open her sisters body, searching for the tiny silver bead that was her soul.
She found it. But as she removed the spirit from the body, the bead crumbled into four small pieces in her palm. Fury desperately tried to catch these Quarters, but they shot out of her hand and across the sky.
Fury raced from planet to planet, stepping through galaxies and running between stars, each time reaching out for the Quarters, and each time they escaped her grasp.
In Fury’s haste to seize the Quarters, she slipped and fell through space. When she caught herself, she looked up to see the Quarters completely out of sight.
Fury returned to her home. The God, finding Gaia nowhere and seeing Fury as the only pure-blood Leader that remained, did not hesitate to take her.
But Fury’s search for the Quarters did not end there.
She sent warriors from all the tribes to comb through the entire universe, and no man could rest until the Quarters were found. She even became so desperate as to send her only son out with them. Most men never returned.
All the while this was happening, the Quarters were running. They could not be as one; they could not be Gaia again. However, although not strictly the one being, they still craved to be near each other.
They played games in the skies, trying to pass the time, to hide their fears and mask their loneliness. They had been reborn, knowing nothing of their mother or their past life as a Goddess.
One day, after years of gliding aimlessly through the universe, they lost their way and crashed into a tiny planet revolving around a great sun.
One Quarter fell harder than the others, foolishly thinking she could make her way alone, and landed alone in the middle of a forest, surrounded by shades of green and brown.
The second Quarter lost her sisters, and wandered until she became tired; settling on flimsy cotton clouds and fell into a deep slumber.
The third Quarter, clinging to her only remaining sister, slipped and dropped into a great whirling ocean, unable to swim and sank to the bottom of the depths.
The final Quarter, filled with sorrow and loneliness, braved the highest mountain she could find and drilled herself into it, going far beneath the crust of the planet, and hiding with the intense heat.
All four Quarters were alone and frightened. They cried. They prayed. They searched. They were being hunted.
