I touched the necklace softly. I'd meant to give that back to him, but now it would just seem rude. I blushed and looked away so he wouldn't see it. I brushed some hair behind my ear as we reached Theta. "I'm..." I thought about it -- no, I wouldn't. "Not going to invite you in," I finished. "Thanks for your help," I pulled my arm out of his grip as I walked into Theta Pi, where Jinny and Tom were up waiting. *Next Night, Nine o'clock* I watched as Naanee walked through the cemetary, clutching her stake. A shadow passed behind her, and she whirled around. As her back was turned, Leon appeared behind her and put his arm around her chest, securing her, and pulling her head back to expose her pale throat. Naanee let out a squeal. "You're dead," I stated, walking into the scene as Leon grinned up at me, keeping his lips on Naanees neck. "Why are you dead?" I raised my eyebrows. Naanee sighed, annoyed that Leon had won against her. "Because I didn't factor he would come from behind me," She muttered. I shook my head. "You forgot who has the power." "I have the stake," She interrupted me, holding up the wooden stake. "The stake is not the power," I sighed, walking closer to them. "Who has the power?" "I do," Leon smirked as his lips closed in a kiss on Naanee's skin. "The vampire always has the power," I reminded her, taking the stake from her hands. "What did your instincts tell you?" I asked, twirling the stake like a baton. "They told me to... Block his attack -- use his own strength against him--" "Liar," I interrupted her. "What did it really tell you?" I demanded. "It told me to run," She rolled her eyes, as Leon released her. "Right. Instinct tells you to run, and you run." She opened her mouth to object and I interrupted her again, "Instinct," I emphasised, "I'll show you." She stepped away from me, so that I was between her a Leon. "Leon, come at me," I told him. He raised his eyebrows and grinned wickedly. "As soon as you're ready," He winked at me. I turned my back to him, turning back to Naanee. "Watch carefully," I ordered her. I felt him coming at me from behind and I took a single step to the left -- Leon couldn't stop running in time and fell forward, hitting his head off a tombstone and rolling onto his back, groaning. I got on top of him, holding him down by the throat, raising the stake. "Now Leon's dead," I looked up at Naanee. "Any questions?"

This was very entertaining, not like you’d expect. I was sitting on a tombstone, watching the whole thing play out with a bag of popcorn in hand. I munched slowly, silently, so as not to draw any attention to my unknown presence in the graveyard. "As soon as you're ready," I heard Leon say as Kestrel turned her back to him. I felt both my eyebrows shoot up. Hmm, this should be interesting… "Watch carefully," Kestrel told Naanee, who leaned in a little from her seat on a grave. Leon came at her from behind; I leaned forward subconsciously like you’d do when transfixed in a movie climax. Kestrel, who’d had her eyes closed, stepped to the side just as Leon made to grab her. He couldn’t stop, and smacked head first into a headstone. I snorted and had to bite my lip to stop from laughing aloud. No one seemed to notice as I fell back silently, in absolute stitches. "Now Leon's dead," I sat up and wiped away a tear, just as Kestrel finished her sentence. "Any questions?" “Is it my turn now?” Naanee murmured, jumping off her seat. Leon stood up and rubbed his forehead, narrowing his eyes and glaring at Kestrel. See? What did I tell you, Slayer training is hilarious. Leon was murmuring something unintelligibly under his breath as he resumed his position. Naanee stood a few metres in front of him, closing her eyes as Kestrel’d done. Leon advanced, again whacking his head off the headstone when Naanee jumped out of the way. I burst out laughing again; I couldn’t help it. I tried to be quiet, but it wasn’t going to matter since they’d all already turned to see me lounging with my legs crossed and doubled over with laughter. “Hehe, please don’t mind me, go ahead!” I was practically begging. “Continue!”

I ran a tired hand through my hair. "We'll call it a night," I told them. Naanee groaned but followed Leon back to the crypt to return our weapons. I turned to Devlin. Was he-- Was he eating popcorn? "Vampires eat popcorn?" I raised my eyebrows. I realised I wasn't wearing the necklace tonight; I'd taken it off when he'd commented on it last night. "What do you want?" I asked, walking next to him. I still wasn't partiularly warming to him after he'd pinned me to my bedroom floor and ripped off my clothes. I jumped as my phone buzzed in my pocket. I was on edge tonight; it was cold enough that I could see my breath. "Jinny--" "Kestrel, you need to get here, we --" She broke off and gave a little scream, making me stop dead. "It's here -- that wolverine vampire -- it's here at Sol's--" "No, Jinny," I shook my head, "That's not possible, we k--" "It's him, Kes!" She screamed, "Sol's hurt -- bad -- I can't wake him up! My protection spell wont hold against him much longer--" "I'm on my way," I assured her. "HURRY!" The line went dead. I looked down at the phone in my hand. "I... I have to go," I broke off a branch, "That vampire we killed last night," I looed back at him, "Didn't stay dead; I need to go -- it's at Sols," I hurried the words as I began running to Sol's apartment. When I opened the door, tables were overthrown. Vases smashed. Sol walked into the hallway where we were standing. I stared at him in confusion. He looked fine... "You're okay," I gasped, lossening my grip on the branch. "Wheres Jinny?" "Haven't seen her," He shrugged, looking at Devlin. "Hey, I didn't invite you in--" "It looks like there was a fight," I told him suspicious by his behavior. "So you came here to criticise my housekeeping?" He demandedimpatiently. There was a little blood on his chin... "William?" I asked cautiously, taking a step towards him. The thing with Sol's face smiled. "And here they told me Slayers were stupid," He grinned viciously, as his face warped back into his own. "Since I died, I became non-corporial for a little while," He walked around me, "And I got to take the form of whatever I wanted," He brushed his claws through my hair, "But don't worry; I'm quite solid now," He slashed at me and I ducked back, falling into Devlin. "What brought you back?" I demanded, landing a high kick to its face. "A spell? Curse? What?" My mind sprung to Lucas...

Something was off… We did kill him, I’d seen it. So far as I knew, there was no way of resurrecting a vampire. Then again, I wasn’t exactly an expert at all that witchy stuff. I stood beside Kestrel, my arms folded. The vampire circled us, flexing his claws menacingly. “I’d rather not say,” He murmured as he advanced on Kestrel a little. I felt myself tense up, ready to pull her out of the way if he attacked. “Promised a friend.” He smiled, baring his razor like teeth. He took a lock of Kestrels hair and twirled it. The action was too close for comfort and I pulled her away closer to me. The vampire flashed me a wicked grin. “Protective, isn’t he?” He looked to Kestrel and I let her arm go, grinning crookedly at the vampire as I said nothing.

I could hear a slight moaning from the other room... Jinny? Sol? I hesitated, and a moment of tension and silence hung between the three of us. Suddenly William swung his claws at me; I ducked and kicked his shins so he fell down. I threw the branch to Devlin and ran to the other room -- Jinny was on the floor, clutching Sol who had a serious headwound and was just coming into consciousness. I found I couldn't come closer than three feet to her... There was a spell surrounding them. She looked up and waved her free hand, getting rid of the spell. "I tried to kill it, Kes, I did," She sobbed. I checked for Sol's pulse. It was slow... He needed a hospital. "What do I--" "Get him to a hospital!" I ordered her, panicking. She stared at something behind me and screamed. William ran at me, slashing at me. I rolled over so he missed me by inches. I kicked it back with as much strength as I could from where I lay; I felt one of its ribs break as it fell backward. I rolled onto my back and then jumped onto my feet to face it. Crap. Devlin had the branch. Where the hell was he?? "you're uninvited into this house," I told it, my fists raised. The vampire snorted, but opened the door and walked out. Jinny had already dragged Sol to her car out back; I heard her start the engine and drive off. I walked into the hallway -- Devlin wasn't there. "Devlin?" I called, my voice ringing through the now empty apartment. I checked all the rooms hurriedly -- was that groaning in the kitchen? "Devlin?" I walked in. He was hurt; his ring was on the ground. "What happened?" I demanded.

THE IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER She threw me the branch and legged it out of the hallway. I caught it awkwardly, my head shooting up to look at the vampire who was now baring his teeth my way. Oh. Crap. This night just took a turn for the worst. "Think fast," I threw the stake branch at him like a javelin, which he dodged. I was already in the kitchen by the time he'd noticed my absence. "Weapon, weapon,” I muttered in a sing-song voice. Ah, a breadknife. Wait, no. Vampires like wood don’t they? I grunted irritably and grabbed the wooden breadboard beside the microwave and shaving cream? What kind of plank shaves in his kitchen?? “Mental note: never eat Sols cooking.” I tried to break off the edge of the breadboard to form a makeshift stake, but the damn thing wouldn’t break! “C’mon you stubborn piece of s-“ “Need some help?” I heard her voice chime from behind me. I spun to face her. “Whoa! Anya? What the hell—?” Oh yeah. Her and Sol were… Tight, I supposed was the word I could use there. “Nevermind. And no, thank you very much, I got this.” I used all my strength, but the damn thing wouldn’t budge. Anya snickered. “Well alright then you ugly old bat, you try.” I flung her the board and she caught it effortlessly, her smile was gone. “Watch and learn, Tempest.” She growled. A scream that wasn’t Kestrels erupted from down the hallway. I spun instinctively in the direction of the noise; It was like nails on a chalkboard. WHACK. This was why you never turned your back on a vengeance demon holding a seriously heavy board of wood. I felt the ring on my finger be yanked off and a soft metallic clang followed. Another smack walloped me to the side of my skull. I heard her demonic laughter fade as she disappeared in a flash of green. I felt very, very dizzy. Was that normal after a head blow? I felt myself drift as a single droplet of blood trickled down my forehead. Great; I was fainting… "…vlin? Devlin? What happened?" Her voice increased in volume as I began to come around. My neck ached. Never trust a woman with the word ‘demon’ in her job description. “I’m fine, thank you for asking,” I wiped the blood away with a peach tea towel. Blood stained didn’t it? Good. “Just a little concussion, nothing major. Might have been seeing can-can dancing showgirls a few seconds ago, but nothing to worry about.” I glanced up at her to make sure she was alright. “You hurt? Where’s William?”

i heard them sayEXACT OPPOSITES ATTRACTif that’s a fact it shouldTAKE TASK FORCE TO BRING YOU BACK I dabbed his temple with the cloth and sighed at his attempted humour. I opened the freezer next to us and grabbed some ice, wrapping it in the cloth and holding it to his head again. "Hold that there," I ordered him quietly as I put his arm around my shoulder and mine around his waste so that I could help him up. He was really off balanced. "You're lucky you weren't staked," I couldn't help but let the annoyance show in my voice. He could have been killed! I picked up the ring and put it in his hand, helping him walk out into the street. Jeez, he was heavy. We finally got to the Jessami house and I helped him up the stairs to his room. "Lie down," I ordered him, taking the ice cloth off him and pushing his hair back to see the wound. I was pretty big... There was a good bit of blood. I bit my lip. "It's... Not that bad," I lied, but I knew he could see right through me. "Well, it's pretty bad," I rushed, "But it should heal quickly," I realised he was leaning in and I pulled away from him abruptly, dropping the cloth and the ice spilled onto the floor. "Um... Sorry," I muttered, losing my train of thought. Ugh! I shouldn't think of Devlin like this anymore; not after... Please please -- I'll do what you want -- please NO! The memory of my own voice rang in my mind as I remembered the pain of him holding me down. I shifted my weight uncomfortably, moving away from him on the bed. "I have a vampire to kill," I murmured uneasily. Ugh, I'd never felt like this before I'd met Devlin. And now it was even more confusing because he'd attacked me and I should hate him... He just had to complicate everything.

THE IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER She dropped the ice. That was probably my fault; I hadn't corrected myself in time. I knew I was leaning in. She stood up abrubtly. This was too much for her; ugh. Way to go Dev. "Um... Sorry," She shifted her weight uncomfortably, nervously. I sighed, wincing at the stinging pain in my head. Friggin' Anya... That woman had it out for me, I just knew it. "I have a vampire to kill," Kestrel sounded so uneasy. I raised my eyebrows and my eyes lingered on the faded marks I'd left on her skin. I still felt terrible for that; I deserved the guilt I supposed. She was almost out the door when I grabbed an old shirt and wiped the blood away. It wasn't so bad; the ring was back on my finger and that help the whole healing process speed along. "I'm coming with you." I told her. My tone made it sound non-negotiable; which it was. I could see she wanted to argue, but I pressed my finger to her lips to shut her up. I retracted y hand almost immediatly though; too quick, Devlin. "Don't argue; lets go." I ushered her out the door, ignoring her complaints. "So where is this vampire anyway?" I asked once we were out the door of Jessami house again. I had to admit, this William bloke was turning into a complete neusance. He just wouldn't stay dead; its not like it was all that difficult.

i heard them sayEXACT OPPOSITES ATTRACTif that’s a fact it shouldTAKE TASK FORCE TO BRING YOU BACK "I have a hunch," I murmured annoyedly, seeing that I had absolutely no choice in the matter of whether or not he was coming with me. We walked to a demon bar, where loud music was pumping from. Many drunk demons were hanging about outside; I let my hair down so it fell around my face, and hid my stake carefully in my belt, under my jacket. "I'm looking for a vampire with long hair; he's tall, Freddie Krugar dress sense?" I asked the Chaos Demon at the door. He pointed inside, so I went in, "Thank you," I smiled politely as I passed him. Two witches, stinking of alcohol and wearing extremely revealing outfits, greeted us. "Some party," I murmured to Devlin; and it really was. Topless women. People doing drugs. Everything. The kind of party you'd rarely get to go to. "I know you, don't I?" One of the witches -- the blond one -- said to Devlin. I rolled my eyes, of course she knew Devlin. "You want a room with a camera or just a room?" She ased, flirtily. Her eyes focused on me, and her smile faultered a little. "You brought a friend," She raised her eyebrows in distaste, "That's cool, so did I," She gestured to the brunette witch beside me. The brunette witch grabbed my collar and pulled me into her, kissing me erotically. I was so shocked at first I didn't react -- and then I came to and pushed her away. "We'll get a room with a camera, okay?" She licked her lips. I nodded and wiped my lips, "Okay," I humoured her, so that the witches would leave. Dating was simpler when I was younger...

darwin's rolling over in his coffin, the fittest are surviving much less often tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding?Majority rule, don't work in mental institutions, Stranded on a primate planet what are we left with? THE IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER Blaring club music. Practically naked women walking around serving alcohol and dancing. A stage? Hmm, something told me it wasn't used for karaoke... This party was missing something though: me. "Wahey, I know this place, and yeah, I definatly remember you. Trixie, was it?" I was very happy I'd come along; slaying just became alot more fun. I knew I was smiling crookedly at Trixie, who looked extatic that I'd remembered her name. "Remind me to come along with you more often, Kes." I told her over my shoulder as Trixie towed me away into the dancing crowd. We danced for a while, and I totally let loose. I noticed a couple of times Kestrel laughing humourously at me, then turning her back when Trixie started to use me as a pole. "Babes, thanks for that, but dancing isn't really my thing," I had to shout over the blaring music. I grinned and made to sit down when she sat ontop of me. "Can I interest you in something else, Dev?" I felt her lips press up to mine and I kissed her back. It was... Exotic. She pulled away and I shook my head. "Not tonight." She pouted and stood up to tend to a chubby man at the bar. I shivered disgustedly when she kissed him. "Bleuch, boomer." I sighed, glancing around for Kestrel but becoming a little sidetraked when a very sexy brunette witch sat down on a ledge in front of me. Her six inch disco heels were swinging infront of my face and I followed the movement with my head, bobbing it as she bobbed her heel. I might consider slaying as a full time occupation; speaking of which, where was Kestrel?

In the alleyway outside the bar, a whole gang of vampires stood in a circle around me. William, the leader of the crew, was grinning wickedly at me. "Now, are we really going to have to do this?" I asked, dreading this completely unfair fight. "Because I don't want to fight all of you unless I have to," I turned the stake over in my hand. I'd just spoken to Naanee on the phone; they'd taken Aimee hostage, and right now her and Jinny were working on some kind of spell... The rest of the conversation, I hadn't caught because of the music. They all came at me at once -- it was extremely awkward trying to fight all of them off. I managed to stake two -- another two grabbed each of my arms while I tried to kick them away from me desperately. William retracted his claws and stood in front of me as the two vampires pinned me to the alley wall. He punched me, hard, and my head hit the wall. Ah, that killed... He raised his fist to hit me again, when his wrist was grabbed by someone behind him. My eyes widened and I felt myself become sick. It wasn't... It couldn't be... "That's not very nice," He said over Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance' which was blaring from the bar. He punched William so hard that he flew back into a dumpster. As the gang were distracted I elbowed the two that were holding me in their faces and stumbled out of the crowd of vampires. Devlin was standing in the doorway, two girls clinging either side of him. "Where the bloody hell have you been?!" I yelled at him, as I high kicked a vampire that was coming at me. The blond girl on his arm looked at me in disgust. "You brought a slayer?!" She shrieked, jumping into the fight. "KESTREL!" No, I still refused to believe it was him. But how else would I explain it? It was L-- No, don't even think his name. I punched the girl that had attacked me hard... Huh, that made me feel slightly better. "Get off her!" He snarled as a vampire behind me attacked me. That was it, I couldn't deny it anymore. He was here. Lucas was here.

THE IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER Who was the blond fellow? He seemed to fighting with us...? I jumped into the fight and the brunette woman to my left ran back inside, bellowing at the top of her lungs. I landed the one a kick in the jaw, just as the blond guy punched me in the gut. I doubled over, just as a witch pulled me back by my hair. I snarled deeply; NO ONE touches the hair. Ever. I grabbed her shoulders and flung her over me. She landed ontop of the blond guy who'd been coming at me with a stake. Oh hell no; staking hurt. I felt for the ring on my finger. Yeah, it was there. Kestrel was having difficulty with a mexican vampire further in the alleyway, and I went to help her, only to be pulled back by the blond vampire whos knuckles then collided with my jaw. I staggered backwards, just as he drove the stake deep into my heart. The pain was overwhelming. I glared down at his awed expression. "WHO ARE YOU?!" I growled angrily, my eyebrows raised. This clown and I were not going to get along...

did I ask too muchMORE THAN ALOTyou gave me nothingNOW ITS ALL I’VE GOT "You're with us?" I heard Lucas demand, and looked back to see a stake in Devlins chest. I staked the Mexican vampire I was fighting and ran back to Devlin, pulling the stake out of his chest and handing it to Lucas. "Can you stand?" I asked, helping him up. I imagined that twinged a bit... "You know this guy?" Lucas asked in disbelief as he fought off the remaining vampires. William, and the surviving few, ran for it. Lucas put his stake away and helped me help Devlin to his feet. Lucas had a car, so I got Devlin in backseat and then sat up front with Lucas. We were five minutes into the drive before Lucas spoke. "Kes--" "Don't start by saying you're sorry," I warned him, looking out my window and running a hand through my hair. Lucas closed his mouth, then opened it a few seconds later, "I've changed." "I believe you," I muttered nonchalntly. Lucas seemed taken aback. "Well... Thats a start." "As to what you've changed into..." I added. Lucas rolled his eyes and groaned. "You can't just blame all our problems on me," He sighed, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. "You weren't the easiest person to live with, you know." "Then you shouldn't have asked me to move in," I answered sharply. "I'm not the one who couldn't commit," He frowned, and I laughed sarcastically. "I'd just turned eighteen; what did you expect me to say?" I demanded incredulously. "Well, a yes would have been nice," He made a sharp left turn. "I mean, the amount of times I had to save you from being eaten -- or worse--" I coughed to stop him from going on, "You killed Riley--" "He was a Chaos Demon--" "We both know you were jealous," I narrowed my eyes at him. "And it's not like you never tried to kill me before--" "Says the girl who tried to stake me on our first date," he interrupted me, and I smiled at the memory. I'd completely forgotten Devlin in the back until he spoke up.

did i ask too muchMORE THAN ALOTyou gave me nothingNOW ITS ALL I’VE GOT "Devlin, Lucas. Lucas, Devlin," I introduced them. The name alone spoke for itself when it came to the matter of who Lucas was. I unbuckled my seat belt and climbed into the back to sit next to Devlin. His chest looked bad. "You must be running out of shirts by now," I raised my eyebrows as I used some ripped material to clean the wound. "No more slaying trips with me, Dev," I sighed as he fought against the cloth, "You've been seriously hurt twice in the one night, Devlin," I frowned, ignoring his wincing. I imagined the wound was raw. "Don't you want to know how I'm alive; after you kindly slayed me last year?" Lucas called from the front. "Frankly, ma dear, I don't give a damn," I murmured as I got the last of the blood off of Devlins chest. It was already healing -- it looked weeks old. "Sorry to interrupt your night out with the witches," I murmured to Devlin, "But you can always go back if they don't try to kill you," I smirked up at him. "My apologies, Wonder Boy," I sighed. "Wonder Boy?" Lucas sounded a little annoyed. I rolled my eyes. "How come I never got a nickname?" "I'll let Devlin answer that," I watched his eyes go from sharp silver to warm grey, and felt myself smile a little.
