Sol and I had been crouching behind a stall next to the alley, as I aimed at the hell hound. I only had one shot. Okay, I just needed to focus -- if we startled it, but didn't kill it, it would go crazy and attack all the people along the bay. And that was a fair few number of people, let me tell you... I breathed out heavily and was about to squeaze the trigger, when Devlin jogged up and pushed Sol out of the way. Sol stood up from his crouch, shocked by Devlin's approach. I stood up too, confused. "Kestrel, don't kill it." Was he mental? I frowned and was about to say something when he continued, "It's not hurting anyone." My eyebrows shot up where as Sol's came together as he scowled. "Well except maybe that guy," Devlin rushed, "But for all we know he could have already been dead." I shut my eyes, not sure if this was really happening. I opened my eyes to stare at my date in disbelief. Was he serious. My mouth hung open slightly in shock. "Wha--" I broke off as the hell hound roared and it's body collided with mine as it charged at me and pinned me to the ground. Geez, it was heavy. I held my crossbow horizontally, the creature biting it, as it's jaws tried to reach me and I held it back. Surrounding bystanders screamed and scrambled away, some pausing to take video's with their phones. I couldn't move with this thing on top of me! "STILL DON'T WANT ME TO KILL IT?!" I yelled at Devlin as I kicked the thing backwards, tumbling onto my feet and taking aim with the crossbow again.

She took aim for the animal and I reacted without thinking; just as she fired the crossbow, I stood in the arrows way and it hit me in the chest instead of the creature. Holy shizah, that hurt!! I pulled out the arrow from my torso, flinching at the gooey sound it made. "Its just a little misunderstood!" I handed her back the arrow just as the creature let out a furious howl and Lunged murderously for Kestrel. She did not look happy about this entire situation. The creature knocked her off her feet and stood over her, growling viciously into her face. Again, I needed to act fast without injuring it too badly... I ran at it from the side, slamming my body into it's and knocking it off of her. We rolled twice and the weight of it nearly crushed me to death. We landed so as I was under it's snarling face; to me, this seemed like a step backwards. "Alright, mongrel, cool it," I breathed steadily. It breathed heavily from it's mouth into my face and I waved my hand infront of my nose, making disgusted retching sounds from the back of my throat. If anything this creature should eat, that was a breathmint. Maybe even a packet or three. "Easy, puppy." I stared into it's demonic, blazing red eyes as I listed my hand to it's face and began to scratch. Slowly at first, but the creature seemed to get into it pretty quickly as it leaned it's head into my hand. It's growling and snarling stopped and a gentle, deep moaning from he creatures throat replaced it. It's eyes turned a deep blue as it wathed me. I smiled, "Easy boy. See? I told you he was just misunderstood. You were just a hungry dog, weren't you boy?" I was scratching bekind both it's ears at once and the creature sighed, obviously loving it.

I couldn't believe it. I rested my elbow casually on Sol's shoulder as we watched the scene play out. "Ah, there is no bond stronger than a boy and his demonic, human eating creature," Sol said sarcastically, crossing his arms over his chest. I laughed shortly at Sol's comment and walked casually to Devlin, crossbow at the ready, just in case. "If you plan on keeping that thing, you can forget about me coming back to your place tonight," I sighed, leaning against Devlin's arm as the creature growled softly at me. I stuck my tongue out at it in response. "I don't think Rex likes me much," I murmured, fixing the arrow back into my crossbow. Something told me that this Hellhound had just killed my date with Devlin. My hand fell into Devlins again, and the things eyes fixed on that, and started growling a little louder. "Aw, I think it has a crush on you," I laughed lightly. I wondered... I kissed Devlin on the cheek, and the thing gave out a kind of mangled bark and took a step towards me. "It's jealous," I grinned, kind of amused. Sol stood beside me. "Aw, Kessie can we keep it please?" Sol mocked, and I pushed him lightly. I leaned against Devlin's arm again. "You gonna' give it a name?" I asked, curious. If I'd realised how much Devlin wanted a dog I would have given him Naanee, geez...

I patted the huge, wolflike demon thoughtfully. A name? What, now we were keeping it? I shrugged; huh. Not many women out there would let him keep a demonic dog as a pet. "You'd actually be alright with me keeping a Hell Hound?" I grinned and nudged her gently. Not that I really needed her permission. It was huge though, with thick black fur and clawas like razors. Don't even get me started on the teeth. It followed us back to Theta, turning the heads of some very shocked passers-by. Their expressions had been priceless. We'd been discussing names the whole way back and the things Sol had come up with. Linx, Demon Dog, Fury, Midnight; could he be less creative? "Kyrk?" I muttered and they all turned to raise their eyebrows questioningly. I sighed, "From Kyrkogrim? The Swedish term for a Grim or Hell Hound. The Swedish Kyrkogrim are said to be the spirits of animals sacrificed by early Christians at the building of a new church. In parts of Europe, including Britain and Scandinavia, a completely black dog would be buried alive on the north side of the grounds of a newly built church, creating a guardian spirit, the church grim, in order to protect the church from the devil." They all looked a little flabergasted; what, did they think I didn't read? "Hey, I like it," I defended, scratching Kyrks huge ears as he turned to growl at a passing mother and her child. She pulled the boy along with her frantically, trying to gather a substancial distance between her and it. "Adda boy, Kyrk." I grinned, wondering if he might do me the honours of swallowing Camilla whole.

Devlin was so pre-occupied with his new pet, he didn't notice myself and Sol leave. We went back to Theta, to Jinny's room. In less than a half hour we were playing a new game of strip poker, not just the three of us but apparently one of my friends from that little memory loss period, Mickey and, just to be nice, Naanee was playing too. Another twenty minutes and we were well into the game. Mickey was winning -- not having lost any clothing, but having gained my dress and my tights. Sol had only lost his belt and his shirt -- both of which I had. Naanee had lost pretty much everything except her bra and pants, same as me, but at least I was wearing Sol's t-shirt which covered me down to my thighs. Jinny had lost her top to Mickey but had one Naanee's shorts and t-shirt, so she was only in her jeans and bra. Mickey was sitting on the bed with his back against the wall. I was lying on my stomach next to him, hanging over the edge of the bed. Jinny was sitting on the floor across from Sol. The almost naked Naanee had been trying to seduce Jinny all night -- my sister was trying to be sexy by being bi-sexual. Right now Naanee was sitting very closed to Jinny. There was a knock on the door. "Do not cheat," Sol warned me and Jinny. As soon as he stood up and turned we looked at his cards and swapped some of ours. Mickey chuckled softly. Devlin was at the door. Naanee seemingly immediately forgot about Jinny and jumped up, running to him. "Devlin!" She exclaimed, wrapping her arms around him and pressing her near nude self to him. I rolled my eyes and took another swig of the vodka we had. Poor Devlin. Right now, both me and Naanee were wearing next to nothing, and he didn't know of any defining scars that could be used to tell us both apart from one another. "Fold," Mickey murmured, putting his cards down. "I fold too," Naanee called from where she was cooing over Devlin. Sol sat back down and checked his hand. When it was apparent that me and Jinny were still in, he smiled. "My jeans," He placed his bet, keeping his cards close to his chest. "I'll match that," Jinny glanced down at her cards and looked to me. I didn't even look at my cards. "Sol's shirt," I wagered. Sol grinned widely, placing down his hand. "Two pairs," He smiled triumphantly. I smirked a little. "Read 'em and weep," Jinny put down her own hand; a full house. Two sevens and three tens. I let myself smile as I flashed them my cards; three kings and two queens. They groaned in unison and stripped off their jeans, throwing them to me. Naanee sat down in her previous seat and started playing with an uncomfortable Jinny's hair. Mickey looked up to Devlin expectantly, as did I. He'd been standing there for an awful long time...

Usually when you walk into a house, you'd expect its occupants to be fully clothed; not that I was complaining on the most part. My eyes lingered on Kestrel, at least I hoped it was Kestrel, and couldn't help but run my eyes over her. I had no idea she was that sexy... It was funny, I'd never really thought of er that way before. "Devlin!" Kes-- No, Naanee? Or wait, that could be Kestrel; well, one of them jumped up excitedly and embraced me. I wasn't sure who I was hugging, so I patted her on the back just in case. Then she started playing with my earlobe. Yeah, this was definatly Naanee. I shrugged away from her a little, looking at Kestrel. She and Naanee were practically naked, except for the shirt Kestrel was wearing. It looked to big to be hers, but it would help me distinguish between them. "Fold," Mickey murmured, putting his cards down. So this was strip poker eh? "I fold too," Naanee said as she fixed my collar obsessively. I shoved her hands away. If she even meantioned a tie I would throttle her. "My jeans," Sol wagered, keeping his cards close to his chest. At least none of the guys were naked; I was very thankful for that. "I'll match that," Jinny. "Sol's shirt," Kestrel said confidently. So it was Sols shirt? It did look a little too feminine to be Kestrels. Sol grinned widely, placing down his hand. "Two pairs." "Read 'em and weep," Jinny had a full house. Kestrel smirked and flashed her winning cards. They all groaned and threw her their jeans. Naanee gave up on my lack of response and sat down in her previous seat. Jinny seemed very uncomfortable. Then they all turned to look at me. I raised an eyebrow and hesitated. What were they all staring at? I looked from one to the other and decided to just invite myself into the game. I shrugged indifferently and threw my leather jacket onto a couch in the corner. I grinned crookedly and folded my legs as I sat down on the floor by the end of the bed. "So, who's winning?" I sorted my cards that Mickey had just delt me. Jinny shied away from Naanee, who was now trying to hold her hand. "Mickey is. Naanee, would you stop that?" She sounded very assertive. Naanee frowned at the rejection, stood up in a huff and planted herself beside me. I groaned and nodded at Jinny. "Thanks." I muttered sarcastically. "Wagers anyone?" Sol murmured. "Naanee's shirt," Mickey grinned. He was still fully clothed, and he had a small clothes pile developing beside him. "My undershirt," Sol grimanced at his cards, but composed himself as he realised his misake. I smiled; his poker face was just as bad as his dress sense. "My shirt," I muttered, keeping my poker face strong. I had four of a kind: four nines and one three.

I held up Jinny's jeans to signify my wager. Jinny smiled at them, pulling off one sock. "My sock," She murmured. She'd stopped betting high because she didn't have much left anymore. "My bra," Naanee grinned. I pulled off Sol's shirt and threw it at her. "What?" She asked innocently, putting on the shirt and then removing her bra. "You show people your body means you're showing people my body," I sighed, staring at my cards. I didn't have a great hand... One pair. And it was two threes. I pulled forward two of my unpaired cards to be swapped for two more, as did Mickey, Sol and Jinny. Naanee folded. So did Sol. I felt less comfortable without the shirt to cover me, but at least I had a bra to cover me, so I decided Naanee needed the shirt more than I did. My hand was now two threes and three jacks. Again, not great. I grimaced at Devlin's cards, and Jinny, Mickey and I passed him our bets. "Here," Mickey put his jacket around my shoulders and winked at me. "You look cold," He murmured. I smiled back, as Jinny dealt us some more cards. I wondered if Devlin knew I could see his cards from where I was lying...

I noticed Kestrel leaning in a little and I pulled my cards out of her veiw. They were crap anyway; two fives, a nine, a jack and an ace. Mickey won that round and I surrendered my shirt to him as the others handed him their wagered garments. Losing my shirt only made Naanee clingier but I shoved her away with my elbow. She was like a moth being attracted to a florescent light. I knew I was sexy and all, but holy crap this was rediculous. She could at least be a little more subtle about the fact. Everyone was placing new bets and I wagered my jeans, purly because I had a full house. There wasn't much conversing going on here, it was kinda dull. Naanee began to trace the lines of my six pack and I flinched away from her hands, "Whoa whoa whoa, you see this space," I traced a line on the floor between us. "This side is my space," I gestured to my side of the line, then to hers. "And this is your side. Stay there." I told her, perfectly serious. She looked like she was about ready to stake me. I wished her the best of luck with that as I felt for the ring on my finger. "SO anyways," Sol muttered, breaking the ice a little, "Tell me, who's team Edward and who's team Jacob?" "I'm guessing your Edward?" Jinny giggled from the corner as she put down her cards. "Read 'em and weep." She had four fives and an ace. "No actually, I think he's team Jacob." Mickey smirked as he put down his full house. His cards were lower than mine, and I grinned. "I'm pretty sure Jacob is the crack child of Remus Lupin and Sirius Black." I smiled as I checked out Kestrels cards. She'd lost too. "Oh yeah? Why?" Jinny sounded curious as she sat forward to look at Naanees bad cards. I shrugged. "Think about it; his last name is Black and he's a werewolf. Thats gotta mean something." I flashed them all my winning cards and they all groaned in unision.

"Let's play truth or dare!" Jinny exclaimed, as she had no socks left. I smirked a little at her; by now I was wearing Sol's jeans and belt to keep them up and just a bra under Mickey's jacket. Still, I was fairly well covered. I rolled my eyes at Jinnys suggestion. "Truth or dare?" I raised my eyebrows, "Really?" "I'll go first!" Naanee exclaimed, "I dare Devlin to kiss me," She grinned. "Doesn't work like that," Jinny shook her head, glancing briefly at me. "And besides, Naanee, you don't want to hit that... That... Evil, soulless, thing," Sol shruged. he hated vampires with a vengance. "Only a loony would do Devlin," He murmured. I closed my eyes for a second. Of course, I hadn't actually told Sol that I'd been with Devlin. Nor did I plan to; I didn't need my friends to be mad at me like that. "Let's get started then," I said quickly, changing the subject. Mickey raised his eyebrows and sat forward. "I'll go first," He suggested, his eyes on me.

They did know I was in the room, right? Those words Sol'd spoken hadn't hurt, but they felt like they should have. "That coming from you, who's engaged to a vengance demon Sol, is very hipocritical." I spoke casually, leaning forward to pick up my shirt and pull it on. "Besides, you'd be calling Kestrel a loony then, right Kes?" I looked at her expectantly, while Naanee shot her the scariest of glares. Kestrel said nothing. I swallowed. So she hadn't told them; was she ashamed? Did she agree with Sol? If ever those words were going to hurt me, it was now. I nodded, forcing the smile on my face to stick. "I see." I glanced at each one of them, who were watching this thing play out. "You-- and, and it?" Sol looked disgusted as I bit my lip, keeping my eyes on Kestrel. She wouldn't even look at me. "No, Sol," I told him, my voice light and my face composed. Inside, I was burning. "There wasn't anything." I stood up. "Sorry I intruded; the thing here is leaving now. See you around." I took my jacket and purposefully left the tie Kestrel had given me on the chair. I walked out of the room and closed the door behind me, only then did my face fall as I squeezed my eyes shut. Why did his hurt so much?? This is what happened wen you let yourself develop feelings for someone. I wasn't going to let that happen again, I decided as I walked away with my leather jacket over my shoulder, still keeping my face composed.

I shrugged off Mickeys jackey and pulled on my shirt, running out after Devlin. "Hey wait!" I called after him, running to catch up. "Wait, please," I whispered, as Sol came out after me, fuming. "Kestrel!" He called at me, just as I followed Devlin out the front door. Sol ran out after me again. "So, what, you blow things off with Austin and jump into bed with the first body you find, dead or alive?" He demanded angrily. I ignored him and caught up with Devlin, grabbing his arm. "Wait," I pulled him back. Sol went to say something and I yelled at him, "Not NOW Sol!" Sol backed away a little, and stormed back inside. "Devlin," I whispered. He looked hurt. "I'm sorry I didn't say anything to them about me and you," I murmured solemnly, "But it wasn't like we were -- I mean, it wasn't like it was serious," I told him honestly, holding on to his hand when he tried to pull away from me. I let go of him suddenly, seeing hurt in his eyes. "Was it?" I asked, uncertainly. Oh, God, had he thought it was serious? That it meant anything?

Ah, so the truth finally comes out. It was a fling to her, nothing serious. I sighed, feeing even more like a dumbass. How the hell hadn't I seen this coming? Of course she thought it was a fling; she changed her mind about this regularly. I was ready to give up on her, and call us just friends. It was times like these when I missed pricky Devlin the most. She looked uncertain, maybe even a little nervous. "Nah, 'course it wasn't." I lied, keeping my distance from her as I held my fake smile. Oh dammit Devlin, thats enough! Stop feeling sorry for yourself, grow a pair and tell her to feck off. Thats what the old Devlin would have done. I knew that was true... But I couldn't do that, even if I tried to. "Don't worry about it Kestrel." I put both hands in my pockets. "It'll be easier now I know where you stand. See you around." I gave her a quick, lifeless grin which also vanished when I turned my back and began to head home.

I felt hurt as he walked away from me. I brushed my hair out of my eyes as I watched him leave. Had he really thought we were something serious? Wait -- were we something serious?! Of course not. He was a vampire, and that meant he was incapable of loving anyone, or even having feelings for anyone. He had no soul. I felt cold as I walked back to my own room at Theta, not alerting my presence to anyone in Jinny's room. Tom was already asleep -- I tried not to disturb him. So what if Devlin could never have feelings for a human like me? I didn't care, did I? Ugh, I needed a break... I didn't go to classes for the next two weeks. I stayed away from everyone, except Tom, and just stayed alone. Giles came looking for me -- told me there was a demon about. That I shouldn't go out slaying. Eventually, I decided I couldn't hide in my room any longer. I left Tom sleeping and went out again. Had the world always been this rainy? I found myself walking through a cemetary in no time, just reading the headstones, when a voice behind me startled me.

"Come here often?" she jumped as I spoke from behind her. I hadn't seen her in a week; she'd missed classes, not that I'd attended many myself, and slaying duties from both my family and Giles. Giles was the reason I wasn't going to class much, he wouldn't leave me alone. Called me 'fascinating' on several occasions, and kept bugging me about Kestrel. Then there was Kestrel. I had no idea how her mind worked; one minute she'd be all for me and the next, she'd want us to just be friends. I was seriously thinking about giving up and allowing whatever feelings I had for her just slip away... I really did have feelings for her, didn't I? I sighed. I dug my hands in my pockets, feeling light drizzle fall onto my hair. "Wanna go somewhere with a roof?" I suggested, thinking of that nice little coffee shop nearby. I'd fed last night, and a hot chocolate sounded great right now. Yeah, I know, vampires weren't supposedto drink anything other than blood. But hey, I was curious and it hasn't killed me yet, nor does it taste half bad. Why the hell not, right?

"A roof sounds nice right now," I smiled weakly at him. I stared at the cemetary grass and sighed heavily. "But I'm actually here on business," I murmured, turning the stake over in my hands. "There's some demon going round with Nightmare on Elm street claws and cutting peoples heads off," I grimaced. I looked up at him again. I knew I was supposed to be slaying -- even though I'd promised Giles I wouldn't -- but that wasn't the reason I didn't want to go someplace with Devlin. Whatever was between us... Doesn't matter. "But in less morbid news," I changed the subject, "Mickey asked me out," I tried to sound happy about it. C'mon, Devlin, say something. Say anything to object to me and Mickey. Tell me he's wrong for me -- please just tell me something. But of course not; that would be making my life too easy, wouldn't it? Why did Devlin have to be a gentleman? Why couldn't he just -- ugh! Forget it. You're with Mickey now, I told myself. He's all you've ever wanted and more.
